At-bats are just as important in business as in baseball.
And when Phoenix Design Works (wwww.PhoenixDesignWorks.com) steps up to the plate, they regularly knock it out of the park – both figuratively and literally.
They’ve knocked it out of the park for the likes of the Florida Marlins, the Colorado Rockies and the Cincinnati Reds, among many other sport franchises.
“Seventeen years ago, we were asked to do a branding program for Brown University,” Amy Skiles, SVP Business Development/Client Services, told us. “and they’re still using it today. From there, we just took off into the world of sports.”
Husband, Jamie Skiles, is the chief designer and Creative Director of Phoenix Design Works. They both started their careers in “traditional’ advertising. After studying art at North Texas State, Jamie went on to work on political and conventional advertising campaigns until he eventually founded his first agency specializing in package design for the likes of Procter + Gamble and General Foods and point-of-sale for companies like Reebok.
In 1996 Team Skiles began Phoenix Design Works and their sports business took off. “The design work we did for Brown University really put us on the map with the collegiate athletics community,” Amy said. From there, the agency went on to develop logos for many Major League Baseball teams including the original Florida Marlins logo, and logos for the Rockies and Reds. The agency also developed the original Major League Soccer logo and has done extensive work for NASCAR.
Despite a very impressive portfolio of work, Phoenix Design Works has found that success can be a double-edged sword. “Because we’re so well known for visual branding and design, people lose sight of the fact that we started out as an advertising agency. We do complete campaigns as well,” Amy Skiles told us. She cited the agency’s more traditional advertising work: “We did a phenomenal campaign for Adelphi University’s admissions and recruiting and they’ve surpassed their numbers for the last three years.”
Phoenix Design Works is a powerhouse agency with an impressive portfolio of work, including their own website. “We developed our website completely in-house. We’ve done web design and development for clients, but more like micro-sites, not complete sites.”
When it comes to client service Phoenix Design Works is an equal opportunity agency. “We treat all the clients the same,” Amy said. “When we say we will deliver a project by a certain day at a certain price, we always deliver by that day at that price, whether the client is big, medium or small.”
